Air purifiers have seen a surge in popularity over the last year, naturally, so have air purifier filters. Like any popular item, it’s only a matter of time until dupes hit the market. This is especially true when it comes to HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters. HEPA filters are the highest performing filters on the market and are held to a specific standard to be considered HEPA grade.
HEPA filters are capable of trapping 99.97% of airborne contaminants down to 0.3 microns in size. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), only these filters will capture the most penetrating particle size. Unfortunately, the counterfeits, mostly found online, are not held to these standards. While the dupes may look like the real deal, they are nowhere as capable at capturing airborne pollutants as a genuine filter. They are comprised of much less material, which result in less contaminants being trapped. With so many fake HEPA filters on the market, there are a few telltale signs that you may have come across one. For example, they will be much cheaper (in price and quality) than a genuine HEPA filter. They also may have an illegitimate serial or model number.
