Eliminate Basement Odor with Winix

Stale, dank, musty – basements get a bad rap sometimes. The stuffiness you may experience could be described as stale air that causes an odor called must. This smell covers a mix of basement “scaries” such as mold, dust, VOCs, and stagnant air. Basements tend to lack airflow, which is an invitation to odors, until now.

The use of an air purifier increases the circulation of air in your basement, while tackling odors and allergens at the same time. Incorporating an air purifier in your basement also increases the air quality you and your family breathes, especially if opening windows isn’t an option. Before you run to purchase an air purifier, it’s important to know that not all air purifiers are built the same. To effectively reduce musty odors and allergens, both a True HEPA Filter AND Carbon Filter is needed. This powerful combination captures unwanted smells and irritating airborne contaminants.

Let’s take a closer look. HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) Filters are composed of thousands of tightly wound, thin fibers. This composition results in the ability to capture ultrafine particles suspended in the air. For a filter to be labeled as HEPA, it must meet stringent requirements. For example, the U.S. Department of Energy states that HEPA Filters must have the ability to trap 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns in size or larger. This includes a range of pollutants and allergens such as pollen, pet dander, dust, smoke, and other ultrafine particles. Winix True HEPA Filters exceed industry HEPA requirements as they capture airborne particles down to 0.003* microns in size.

Winix Carbon Filters are specifically designed to reduce odors and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). These perforated filters absorb odors and pollutants present in the air through the filters incredibly small pores. They work by absorbing the rooms pollutants onto its large surface area. The carbon then acts as a magnet by pulling the pollutants out of the air and trapping them onto the filter. Furthermore, Carbon Filters help prolong the lifespan of the True HEPA Filter!

In addition to ridding your basement of unpleasant odor, incorporating an air purifier helps in many other areas. The increased air circulation leaves your space feeling less stuffy and the reduction of allergens reduces unpleasant side effects. The air quality in your basement is just as important as the air quality in other rooms, and possibly more important due to lack of airflow. The right air purifier with the correct filters will rid your basement of unpleasant odor and leave you with a space you and your family can enjoy.
