A Better You Starts with Better Air

It’s the start of a new year! Resolutions are blooming and newfound determination has been discovered! Did you know, the most common resolution year over year is weight loss? This health goal is closely followed by increased exercise and plans for a healthy lifestyle. We may not be able to help you to lose weight or rev up your workout routine – but we can certainly impact a healthier lifestyle with cleaner air.

A healthier lifestyle starts with what we put in our bodies. We drink water to stay hydrated, fuel ourselves with nutritious food for energy, but what about our lungs? When we exercise, our lungs are working overtime. In fact, Breathe explains that when we exercise and our muscles work harder, our bodies use more oxygen and we produce more carbon dioxide. To cope with this extra demand, our breathing has to increase from roughly 15 times a minute (12 liters of air) while resting, up to about 40–60 times a minute (100 liters of air) during exercise.

Not only is your oxygen intake increasing up to 300% a minute, but that oxygen is now traveling throughout your body. The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) states that during exercise, two of the important organs of the body come into action: the heart and the lungs. The lungs bring oxygen into the body, to provide energy, and remove carbon dioxide, the waste product created when you produce energy. The heart pumps the oxygen to the muscles that are doing the exercise. Shouldn’t the oxygen you’re breathing be safe?

In recent years, many of us have turned to “at home” workouts – so let’s talk a bit more about the air inside our in-home gyms. These spaces are sometimes used less than other rooms within the home, resulting in reduced air flow and an increase in stagnant air. This combination results in the formation of dust and odor. Sweat and body odors aside, the equipment you’re using can also emit unwanted odors. Gym floor padding, latex resistance bands, and rubber coated weights are all culprits of releasing odor into the air. However, their emission doesn’t stop there. These common workout tools have also been found to release VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) which can consist of many harmful chemicals – including formaldehyde. The American Lung Association explains that “Breathing VOCs can irritate the eyes, nose and throat, can cause difficulty breathing and nausea, and can damage the central nervous system as well as other organs. Some VOCs can cause cancer.”

With the addition of a Winix air purifier, you can reduce those unwanted odors and VOCs and capture up to 99.99%* of airborne allergens, contaminants, pollutants, and ultrafine particles (we’re talking to you, dust). In continuing your journey to be as healthy as possible this year, resolve to breathe the best air available!
