Keep it Moving: The Importance of Air Circulation

With winter making its arrival across the nation, more Americans are staying inside to avoid frigid temperatures and keep warm. While maintaining healthy air quality is always imperative, it becomes challenging during colder months. We’ve sealed windows shut and have turned on the heat and humidifier for the first time all year. While the warm, humidified air creates a welcoming space, its proper circulation that’s imperative in not just having a comfortable home but a healthy breathing environment.

Air circulation is the movement of air within a space. Proper air circulation can be impacted by your home’s ventilation system, windows being open or closed, and people entering and leaving the home. Have you ever entered a room or home and smelled stale, stuffy air? That smell is the result of particle buildup and a clear sign that the space is lacking proper air circulation. Although unpleasant, this is a common occurrence in any home. In addition to the odor of stale and stuffy air, poor air flow results in trapping airborne contaminants in the room. With a humidifier running, this adds moisture to stagnant spaces which can result in the growth of mold. Efficient air flow throughout your home helps regulate temperature, remove or prevent the buildup of airborne pollutants, clears out unpleasant odors, and can prevent the development of mold-prone dampness.

Proper, or improper, air circulation plays a large role in your home and in your health. Poor air circulation lowers the air quality in a room. This exposure can be life altering for those with preexisting respiratory issues or allergies and leave sufferers relying on medication to avoid breathing difficulties and asthma attacks. Poor air quality doesn’t just affect our lungs; it can cause skin issues to arise that range from simple itching to harmful dermatitis. For those without preexisting respiratory issues or allergies, poor air quality can result in sneezing, runny/stuffy nose, red/itchy/teary eyes, wheezing, coughing, tightness in the chest, shortness of breath, headaches, dizziness, and fatigue.

Fortunately, introducing an air purifier into your home increases air circulation while also continuously cleaning the air in the room. What was stale, uncirculated air is now being purified and distributed throughout your space. This results in a healthier, safer breathing environment with a reduced risk of health-related side effects and a reduction of unwanted issues within the home.
