Maintaining Your Air Health: True HEPA Edition

We all want to provide our families with the best air quality possible. Air purifiers work by capturing a multitude of pollutants and airborne contaminants that are present in your home, that otherwise, you and your family would be breathing. However, once trapped in the filters, these particles slowly accumulate. If not replaced, this renders both the filter and air purifier useless in improving your indoor air quality.

It is important to note that specific types of filters are needed for efficient air quality, specifically, a HEPA filter. HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters are held to higher standards and must satisfy certain levels of efficiency. HEPA filters are capable of trapping 99.97% of airborne contaminants down to 0.3 microns in size. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), only HEPA filters will capture the most penetrating particle size. Winix True HEPA filters exceed industry HEPA requirements as they capture 99.99%* of airborne contaminants down to 0.003 microns in size. With that said, it’s imperative that you know how to maintain the health of your HEPA filter – your clean air depends on it.

Conveniently, every Winix air purifier comes with a Filter Replacement Indicator light. This feature takes any guesswork out of when your filter needs replacing. In addition, here are some facts to keep in mind when checking on and maintaining your True HEPA Filter.

  • When exposed to average air quality conditions, rule of thumb says a True HEPA filter will have a lifespan of 1 year
  • Your True HEPA filter may need to be replaced more often if exposed to a larger number of pollutants, like those found in city environment, with pets, or smoking
  • Frequency of use plays a role in filter replacement – the more you run your air purifier, the quicker your True HEPA will need to be replaced
  • Take a peek – if your once white True HEPA filter is now graying in color, its time for a replacement

While these are good tips to follow, it’s important to trust your Winix! It’s easy to lose track of when you last replaced your True HEPA Filter, so checking to see if your Filter Replacement Indicator light is illuminated is a guaranteed way to ensure the cleanest air for you and your family.
