August is National Wellness Month! While major lifestyle changes may not be feasible, making small changes to your daily routine can have a large impact on your overall health. In honor of National Wellness Month, here are 5 ways you can improve your overall health and wellness!

Hydrate! Did you know that the average human body is composed of 50-70% water? So, it goes without saying that staying hydrated is necessary in maintaining good health. Hitting your daily water goals helps your body is many ways. Water regulates your body temperature, keeps your organs functioning properly, and improves your sleep. According to Mayo Clinic, it is recommended that men consume about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids a day and women consume about 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day.

Fitness! One of exercise’s biggest benefits is that it increases our brains serotonin levels. Serotonin is the hormone that stabilizes our mood and happiness. Serotonin also helps with sleeping, eating, and digestion. Exercise can also help protect you from illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Nutrition! What we put into our bodies matter! Proper nutrition and caloric intake will vary between individuals, but the basic principles of eating healthy apply to everyone. It’s important to eat fruits and vegetables, consume foods containing fiber, choose leaner meats over fatty meats, try to avoid unhealthy fats, and be sure to take daily vitamins.

Relax! Finding time for relaxation has been proven to help our overall wellbeing. Relaxation reduces stress, improves mental health, and can lower high blood pressure. Relaxing comes in many forms for different people, but regardless of what your outlet may be, it’s important to put time aside for it!

Sleep! Getting a good night of rest reboots your body for the next day. Sleep allows the brain and body to slow down and engage in processes of recovery. These processes promote both better physical and mental performance the next day and the long-term. Proper sleep helps with weight management, appetite control, and concentration, and our mood the next day.

Now that you have some helpful wellness tips, use this month as your chance to begin healthier routines that can positively impact both your short and long term health!
