Minimize Dust During Your Remodel with Winix

XQ Air Purifier in room being remodeled

While dust is common in every home, its presence becomes exacerbated when a remodel or construction project is underway. Not only is it gathering on the surfaces around you, it’s also gathering in the air you and your family breathes. Dust can intensify preexisting health problems and even create new ones. We can try our best by keeping the construction site behind tarps and vacuuming consistently, but dust will find its way throughout the home. Interestingly enough, by the time dust has built a visible layer on surfaces beyond the construction site, you’ve already been breathing in its combination of organic and inorganic particles.

First, what is dust anyway? Dust on a construction site is comprised of respirable crystalline silica (the result of stonework), various types of wood (medium density fiberboard), and gypsum (plasterboard). This new dust is now being combined with the dust already present in your home. Naturally occurring dust inside of a home contains pet hair and dander, human skin cells, food particles, rodent waste, insect waste and more. While humans have their own ‘filtration system’ to keep large particles out, smaller particles like those found on a construction site, tend to make their way into our lungs, which is where problems begin.

According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology (ACAAI), exposure to dust can result in sneezing, runny/stuffy nose, red/itchy/teary eyes, wheezing, coughing, tightness in the chest, and shortness of breath. The American Lung Association goes on to say, “exposure to dust mites at home can dramatically impact the health of people with asthma and those who are allergic or particularly sensitive to mites.” Dust doesn’t just affect our lungs; it can also cause skin issues to arise that range from simple itching to harmful dermatitis. Luckily, these risks can be reduced.

There are several recommendations when it comes to tackling and eliminating this health hindrance, but a common remedy is introducing an air purifier into your home. And it’s imperative that the air purifier contain a HEPA filter. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), only these filters will capture the most penetrating particle size. Fortunately, every Winix air purifier contains a True HEPA filter. Winix True HEPA filters capture 99.99%* of airborne particles as small as 0.003 microns in size.

While we can’t eliminate dust entirely, the combination of following construction protocol and the use of an air purifier can significantly reduce the unpleasant side effects of dust. While you work hard on your new remodel, Winix works hard in eliminating the presence of particles suspended in the air, ensuring the best air and better health for you and your family.
