A Valuable Summer Must Have

After a long winter, it’s safe to say that summer is officially underway! Get out the shorts, t-shirts, and sandals! Keeping cool is key during the summer so it’s more than likely you’ll have your air conditioning running. Although cranking the AC offers a comfortable refuge during the summer months, it can cause dry air. The solution? A humidifier.

While running a humidifier seems more common during winter months, you’ll also benefit from its operation during summer! Air conditioning removes moisture from the air in your home. The use of a humidifier replaces this lost moisture and works in maintaining a healthy humidity level. The lack of humidity in your home can result in many unpleasant side effects. It can leave you with feelings of physical discomfort and its absence creates a space where viruses thrive. Humidity is an essential aspect of our health and wellbeing. Maintaining the proper level of humidity in your home results in feeling healthier and more comfortable.

It is recommended that the level of humidity in your home rests between 40% and 60%. The exact humidity percentage you leave your home at is a personal preference, however, having humidity either too low or too high comes with risk. Humidity levels that are too high can adversely affect the skin. When too much moisture is present in the air, skin fungus can grow, athlete’s foot can form, and atopic or allergic dermatitis can flare. When humidity levels inside your home are too low, you may experience respiratory issues such as dry cough, wheezing or the exacerbation of preexisting respiratory troubles.

In addition to preventing health issues, the presence of moisture in your air works as a natural way to ease sleep complications such as snoring. Snoring occurs when the sinus membranes are dry, once your sinus membranes are too dry, they struggle in producing moisture on their own. Dry sinus membranes don’t allow air to move freely within your respiratory system and results in a pulsation, better known as a snore. Maintaining or creating moisture in the air while asleep largely impacts the quality of sleep you’ll receive. Running a humidifier at night greatly reduces tossing and turning, allowing you and yours to have a sound sleep.

As you now know, humidity is as much of a summer essential as it is in winter. Investing in the right humidifier regulates the humidity levels inside your home while preventing unpleasant health effects and allowing a good night’s sleep.
